Review:
When this movie first came out in 1980, I remember going to see it on opening night. The sheer terror that I experienced in watching The Shining was enough to make me go to bed with the lights on every night for the entire summer. This movie just scared the shit out of me, because it still happens every time I rented the video to re-watch. I have seen The Shining at least six or seven times and I still believe it is simultaneously and paradoxically enough, one of the most frightening and yet the funniest movies I've ever seen. Scary because efficient use of extraordinary long shot to create a feeling of isolation, convex lens shot increases Surrealism, and carefully scored the music to bring the voltage level to almost unbearable levels. And funny as Jack Nicholson outrageous and in many cases ad-libbed screen antics. Never ceases to amaze me how The Shining is actually two films in one, both comedy and horror films. Ghost sightings that are abusive threatening most striking films of the first half, which gradually developed into a physical threat is getting worse as time passes. Be that as it may, there is very little violence obvious given the intensity, but it was small consolation for the feint hearted as terror is more implied than manifest. The Shining is a really scary movie that works symbolically on many levels, but it is essentially about human weaknesses and how they can be utilized by the unconscious forces combined with the weakness of the will. This movie scared mostly just use your suggestion to turn on your imagination. The Shining is a brilliant cinematic masterpiece, the likes of which have never been seen before or since. Highly, highly recommended. - Paul
